Purpose: This study aimed to explore and describe nurses' prejudice toward foreigners. Methods: The participants in the current study were 16 nurses who had worked in university hospitals. Data were collected using focus group interviews and an inductive content analysis was conducted with three focus groups. Results: The contents with regard to prejudice toward foreigners were categorized into three themes: prejudice formation, triggers of prejudice and prejudiced behaviors. The participants' prejudice toward foreigners as instigated by appearances, attitudes, or the national economic statuses of foreigners were added to the prejudice which had been formed previously. Prejudiced behaviors included discriminative attitudes, devotion withdrawal, defensive behavior, or derision. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that nurses may have positive or negative prejudices toward certain foreigners, which can affect their nursing practice. These findings also warrant the development of programs designed to increase awareness of and reduce nurses' prejudice toward foreigners.

포커스그룹의 크기는 4~6명 또는 8~10명으로 이루어지는 경우가 있는데, 일반적으로 4~6명으로 구성되는 경우 상세하고 심층적인 정보를 더 얻을 수 있어(Greenbaum, 1998) 본 연구에서는 참여자의 편의성을 함께 고려하여 각 집단을 5~6명의 참여자로 구성하여 운영하였다. 본 연구에서 시행한 포커스그룹은 사전에 구성한 질문을 중심으로 시행된 구조화가 높은 형태로 2시간내외 1회씩 시행되었고, 3개의 포커스그룹을 시행한 결과 더 이상 새로운 내용이 나오지 않아 자료의 포화가 이루어졌다고 판단하였다. 포커스그룹의 시행은 방음이 되는 단독공간의 세미나실에서 연구자가 직접 진행하였고, 내용은 음성 녹음기에 녹음되었다.

대상 데이터

연구참여자는 외국인 환자를 간호한 경험이 있는 간호사로서 지역, 학력, 경력, 근무부서 등을 고려하여 모집하였다. 본 연구의 참여자는 도시 2곳에 소재한 500병동 이상의 종합병원에 근무하는 임상간호사 16명으로 모두 여성이었으며, 일반간호사로 재직 중이었다. 연령은 30세 이하인 경우가 9명(56.

수집된 자료는 귀납적 질적 내용분석방법의 분석절차(Graneheim & Lundman, 2004)에 따라 다음과 같은 단계를 거쳐 분석되었다.

성능/효과

편견은 일반적으로 유아기에 형성되며 연령이 증가하면서 사회화와 TV 매체, 인터넷 등을 통해 고정화되는 경향을 보인다(Jang & Jeong, 2009). 본 연구에서 참여자들은 일반적인 편견형성 과정을 경험하게 되는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 어린 시절 흑인을 피하는 부모의 행동을 보면서 암묵적으로 편견 형성에 영향을 받거나 백인을 긍정적인 모습으로, 흑인과 중국인을 부정적인 모습으로 보여 주는 대중매체의 메시지를 반복적으로 접하게 되면서 자연스럽게 외국인에 대한 편견이 형성되어 온 것으로 나타났다.
본 연구에서는 외국인 환자를 돌보는 간호사들의 기존의 편견에 더하여 외국인의 출신국 경제력, 외모, 태도 등에 의해 편견이 촉발되면서 임상실무에 영향을 주는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 최근 우리나라에서는 국가적 차원으로 의료관광 활성화 정책을 적극적으로 확대(Jo & Park, 2012)하고 있고, 결혼이민자를 비롯한 다문화 집단에 대한 관심이 증대(Nam & Jeong, 2013)되고 있어 의료인들의 문화적 역량에 대한 요구가 높아 지고 있지만 의료인들의 준비와 역할에 대한 기대의 간극은 여전히 크다는 것을 보여준다.

후속연구

첫째, 의료인과 외국인 환자 간 상호작용의 보다 철저한 분석을 위하여 진료나 간호 상황을 녹화하고 분석하는 연구방법을 활용한 연구를 제언한다.
둘째, 외국인의 입장에서 그들이 의료현장에서 경험하는 것을 인종별 또는 국가별로 파악하는 것이 필요하다.
셋째, 의료인의 외국인에 대한 편견감소를 위한 프로그램을 개발하고 의료 현장에 적용하여 그 효과를 검증하는 연구를 제언한다. ;
