배회에 영향을 끼치는 특징적인 메커니즘은 무엇인가? 본 연구는 또한 이러한 여러 환경요소들이 몇 가지 특징적인 메커니즘(mechanism)을 통해 배회에 영향을 끼침을 밝혀내었다(Figure 1). 이들은 다음과 같다: 1) 치매 환자의 걷는 거리 감소 및 앉을 수 있는 공간을 제공(Reduce Walking Distance and Provide Sitting), 2) 치매환자의 스트레스, 불안감, 혼돈 감소(Reduce Stress, Agitation, and Confusion), 3) 치매 환자 주의/관심을 끌거나 딴데로 돌림(Divert or Call Attention), 4) 허락되지 않은 곳으로의 진입을 제어함 (Control Access) 5) 치매 환자의 위치를 파악함(Identify Patient Location), 6) 출구찾기 행동이나 탈출을 줄임(Reduce Exit-seeking or Exiting). 마지막 메커니즘인 출구찾기 행동이나 탈출을 줄이는(Reduce Exit-seeking or Exiting) 것은 두 번 째와 세 번째 메커니즘과 긴밀한 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났다.
