미국의 NLSY 자료를 이용한 검증에서 어머니 특성, 환경특성, 그리고 자녀 특성은 가정환경에 어떤 영향을 주는가? 이처럼 가족 및 자녀의 특성은 양육이 일어나는 가정환경을 예측할 것으로 기대되는데, Baharudin과 Luster(1998)는 미국의 National Longtitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY)의 자료를 이용하여 가정환경에 영향을 미치는 요인을 어머니 특성, 환경특성, 그리고 자녀 특성으로 나누어 그 효과를 검증한 바 있다. 연구결과에 따르면, 어머니 교육수준과 지능이 높고 자아존중감이 높을 때 더 나은 가정환경을 제공하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 높은 가족소득과 더 적은 자녀 수, 그리고 결혼생활에 대한 만족도가 자녀 발달에 적합한 가정환경을 예측하였다.
