Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a multicultural education program for nursing students and to examine its effects on multicultural sensitivity and efficacy. Methods: A research design for this study was a non-equivalent control group, non-synchronized pre-post test. The experimental group (n=34) participated in a 13-week multicultural education program while the control group (n=35) attended regular classes having no relation with multiculture for the same period as that of the experimental group. Multicultural sensitivity and efficacy were measured before and after the program. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using the PASW 18.0 program. Results: Total scores for multicultural sensitivity and efficacy were significantly increased in the experimental group compared with the control group after the program. The subcategories of multicultural sensitivity; 'respect for cultural differences', 'interaction enjoyment' and multicultural efficacy; 'general functions', 'considering multicultural families' were increased respectively, whereas others were not changed. Conclusion: Based on these results, it can be suggested that a 13-week multicultural education program is effective for improving nursing students' level of multicultural sensitivity and efficacy.

대상 데이터

본 연구의 대상자는 G시의 G대학교 간호학과 2학년 대상으로 편의 표출하였으며, 이전에 다문화 교육의 노출 경험이 없는 학생을 대상으로 하였다. 본 교과목을 선택과목으로 개설하여 본 다문화 교육 프로그램이 개설된 교과목을 선택한 대상자를 실험군에 배정하였고 대조군은 다른 선택교과목을 이수하는 학생을 대상자로 하였으며, 실험기간 동안 다문화 교육에 노출되지 않도록 하였다.
본 연구는 13주간의 다문화 교육 프로그램이 간호대학생의 다문화 감수성 및 다문화 효능감에 미치는 효과를 파악하기 위한 비동등성 대조군 전후설계(nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design) 연구이다. 실험군은 다문화 교육 프로그램을 13주간 실시하였고, 대조군은 같은 기간 동안 다른 교과의 교육을 적용한 군이다.

데이터처리

실험전 실험군과 대조군의 동질성 검정은 χ²-test, Fisher's exact test 및 independent t-test로 분석하였다. 다문화 감수성 및 다문화 효능감의 교육 전과 후의 차이에 대한 검정을 위해 paired t-test를 실시하였다. 각 통계량의 유의 수준은 p<.

13주기의 다문화 교육 프로그램을 개발하여 프로그램을 적용 받는 실험군과 그렇지 않는 대조군간 다문화 감수성 및 효능감의 변화를 조사한 결과 실험군의 다문화 감수성 및 효능감 점수가 대조군에 비해 유의하게 증가한 것으로 나타나 다문화 교육 프로그램이 간호대학생의 다문화 감수성 및 효능감 증진에 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 한편 다문화 감수성의 하위 영역 중 ‘다문화 참여’, ‘다문화 소통에 대한 자신감’ 및 ‘다문화에 대한 주의 깊은 소통’과 다문화 효능감의 하위영역 중 ‘인간관계 증진 측면’이 유의한 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다.
13주기의 다문화 교육 프로그램을 개발하여 프로그램을 적용 받는 실험군과 그렇지 않는 대조군간 다문화 감수성 및 효능감의 변화를 조사한 결과 실험군의 다문화 감수성 및 효능감 점수가 대조군에 비해 유의하게 증가한 것으로 나타나 다문화 교육 프로그램이 간호대학생의 다문화 감수성 및 효능감 증진에 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 한편 다문화 감수성의 하위 영역 중 ‘다문화 참여’, ‘다문화 소통에 대한 자신감’ 및 ‘다문화에 대한 주의 깊은 소통’과 다문화 효능감의 하위영역 중 ‘인간관계 증진 측면’이 유의한 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 간호대학생의 다문화 감수성 및 효능감 증진을 위한 본 교육 프로그램의 개선이 필요함을 제시한다.

후속연구

이러한 결론을 토대로 추후에는 본 연구에서 유의한 차이가 없었던 다문화 감수성의 하위 영역 중 ‘다문화 참여’, ‘다문화 소통에 대한 자신감’ 및 ‘다문화에 대한 주의 깊은 소통’과 다문화 효능감의 하위영역 중 ‘인간관계 증진 측면’의 개선을 위해 다문화 대상자와의 접촉 경험을 증가시켜 적용해보는 추가·반복적인 연구를 제언하고자 한다.
이상의 연구결과는 13주기의 교과 형태로 제공한 다문화 교육 프로그램이 간호대학생의 다문화 감수성 및 효능감을 증진시키는데 효과적임을 제시하고, 졸업 후 간호현장에서 다양한 문화권의 대상자를 만나고 문화적 차이를 고려한 간호를 제공해야 하는 간호대학생을 위한 다문화 교육 프로그램으로 사용될 수 있음을 제시하고 있다. 또한 본 연구의 종속변수의 하위영역 중 일부 영역이 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타나 이를 개선하기 위한 다문화 대상자 방문 횟수를 증가시킨 반복 연구의 필요성이 있음을 보여주고 있다.

	다문화 감수성의 중요성이 강조되는 이유는?	한편, 다문화 효능감은 타 문화의 차이에 대해 민감하게 주의를 기울일수록 더 높은 것으로 보고한 선행연구 결과(Bae & Park, 2013)는 다문화 효능감 증진 교육이 다문화 감수성 함양을 토대로 이루어져야 함을 제시하고 있다. 다문화 감수성이라는 개념은 상호작용 참여, 문화간 차이존중, 상호작용 자신감, 상호작용 향유 및 상호 작용에 대한 주의를 포괄하는 개념으로 다른 문화권 대상자와 의사소통을 위해 반드시 필요한 능력으로서 그 중요성이 강조되고 있다(Chen & Starosta, 2000). 보건의료인과 관련된 다문화 감수성은 대상자와 자신의 가치 및 건강에 대한 인식 차이를 인정하고 이에 민감해지는 것으로 정의되고 있다(Goicoechea-Balbona, 1997).
	국내 체류 외국인에 대한 다양한 사회적 문제가 대두된 배경은?	우리나라는 다른 선진국에 비해 비교적 늦게 외국인의 유입이 시작됐기 때문에 외국인을 위한 지원체계 및 법적인 정비가 충분히 마련되지 않은 상태에서 다문화 사회로 진입하게 되었다. 이에 따라 국내 체류 외국인의 고용, 임금, 가정 및 자녀 교육 문제 등 다양한 사회적 문제가 대두되었다.
