본 연구는 중년남성의 뇌졸중 후 편마비 경험의 의미 및 본질을 이해하여 간호실무에 기초자료를 제공하고자 현상학적 연구방법을 적용한 질적연구이다. 연구대상은 S시의 D병원에서 2014년 11월 24일부터 2014년 12월 6일까지 뇌졸중 후 편마비로 입원중인 중년남성 8명으로 심층면담을 하였다. 연구 결과 참여자의 경험은 '기나긴 여정의 가시밭길', '고장 난 브레이크', '마음의 갈림길', '짓눌리는 가장의 버거움', '어둠을 밝혀주는 이정표', '제2의 인생의 길' 의 6개의 범주와 이들 범주에 포함된 16개의 주제묶음으로 확인 할 수 있었다. 이는 중년기에 뇌졸중으로 인해 신체적 고통과 심리적 갈등, 역할장애 등 후유증과 합병증으로 삶의 질에 심각한 영향을 미치므로 본 연구결과를 바탕으로 중년기 뇌졸중 남성 환자들을 전반적으로 이해하고 간호 실무에 새로운 통찰력과 도움을 제공할 것으로 사료된다. 또한 뇌졸중 환자의 재발을 막고 회복을 도와 정신적, 신체적 건강문제뿐 아니라 가정이나 사회에서의 역할 재정립을 통해 건강한 삶을 유지하도록 중재할 필요가 있다.
