본 연구는 장애인 이용자의 실증적인 도서관서비스 이용 실태 및 요구도를 장애유형별로 조사하고 분석함으로써, 도서관 장애인서비스를 제공할 때 장애인 이용자들이 우선적으로 요구하는 구성요소들을 도출하고자 수행되었다. 연구 결과로, 첫째, 장애인 이용자의 실질적인 도서관 이용실태 현황을 장애유형별로 분석하였다. 둘째, 도서관 장애인서비스의 주요 구성항목에 대한 장애유형별 중요도 및 만족도를 조사하여 제시하였다. 셋째, 도서관 장애인서비스의 주요 구성항목별 Borich 요구도를 분석하고 장애유형별 도서관서비스 활성화 방안을 제시하였다. 넷째, 장애인 이용자의 이용 목적별 도서관 장애인서비스 주요 항목에 대한 Borich 요구도 차이를 분석하고 장애유형별로 도서관 이용 목적을 충족시키기 위한 방안을 제안하였다. 다섯째, 장애인 이용자의 이용 도서관 유형별 Borich 요구도 차이를 분석하고 장애유형별 도서관서비스 제고 방안을 제시하였다.

어떤 지식정보 취약계층에 정보서비스를 제공해야 하나? 사회적 양극화 현상을 문화적으로 완화시키고, 사회적 약자 계층인 지식정보 취약계층에게 평등한 정보접근을 가능하게 하는 기관으로써 도서관의 기능은 현대사회에서 더욱 중요해 지고 있다. 이와 같은 이유로  도서관법 에서는 도서관의 주요 책무로서 지식정보 취약계층의 지식정보 격차 해소를 명시하고 있으며, 동법 시행령 제21조에서 지식정보 취약계층에 대해  장애인복지법 에 따른 장애인,  국민기초 생활보장법 에 따른 수급권자, 65세 이상의 노인, 농어촌의 주민으로 정의하고 도서관이 이들을 위한 정보서비스를 제공해야 함을 강조하고 있다.
장애인 이용자의 실증적인 도서관서비스로는 무엇이 필요한가? 첫째, 도서관 장애인서비스의 주요 구성항목별 Borich 요구도를 분석한 결과, 시각 및 청각 장애인 이용자의 경우 ‘도서관 직원’에 대한 요구도가 가장 높게 나타나 도서관서비스 활성화를 위해서는 사서, 수화통역사, 사회복지사 등각 장애유형별 이용자를 대상으로 적절한 서비스를 제공할 수 있는 전문직원의 배치 및 활용이 우선적으로 필요하다. 또한 지체장애인 이용자의 경우 ‘도서관 장서’에 대한 요구도가 가장 높게 나타나 도서관서비스 제고를 위해서는 읽기쉬운도서, 큰클자도서, 디지털 녹음도서 등 지체장애인 이용자가 선호하는 질 높은 도서관 장서의 구비가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.
