비트코인으로 인해 블록체인에 대한 관심이 상당히 높아졌다. 대부분의 일반 사람들은 블록체인은 가상화폐라고 의미를 부여하고 의구심을 갖는다. 그러나 앞서 블록체인에 대한 이해를 통해 가상화폐는 블록체인 시스템을 유지하기 위한 보상 체계의 부산물일 뿐이라는 사실을 알 수 있다. 블록체인을 가상화폐 측면이 아닌, 데이터의 분산성, 확장성, 투명성, 보안성, 안정성 등의 측면에서 바라본다면 향후 그 가치가 매우 큼을 추정할 수 있다. 이를 식품 산업에 활용하여 식품 제조 및 유통에 적극 반영하여 최종 소비자에게 신뢰할 수 있는 안전한 먹거리를 제공하는 것에 가치를 부여하면 좋을 것이라는 결론에 다다랐다. 결론적으로 블록체인은 항상 서비스 시스템이 실시간으로 감시하고 있으므로, '누구도 이미 만들어진 데이터를 원하는 대로 조작할 수 없다'라고 이해를 하면 될 것이고 이를 어떻게 활용할지 여부에 대해서는 식품 도메인을 잘 알고 있는 연구자 여러분의 몫이 될 것이다.
