최근 산업공간의 새로운 변화와 관련된 논의들이 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구는 2000년대 이후 전 세계적으로 도시를 중심으로 급격하게 확산되고 있는 메이커스페이스에 주목하였다. 메이커스페이스는 새로운 산업공간의 핵심적 특징을 잘 보여주면서도 사회운동의 과정을 통해 탄생하는 등 관련 분야의 심도 있는 연구의 필요성이 높다. 이에 본 연구는 산업공간의 도심화에 대한 이론과 그 내부의 장소화에 대한 논의를 토대로 메이커스페이스의 도시성과 장소성을 분석하고 그 함의를 도출하고자 하였다. 먼저, 메이커스페이스의 도시성은 도시 내부의 상업 및 주거지역, 산업시설로 진입하는 현상과 도시의 교육·연구, 산업육성, 문화·여가 등 도시 역량과 연계하는 모습을 통해 나타난다. 또한, 내부에서는 취향의 중시, 자율의 확산, 연결의 강화를 통해 장소성이 형성된다. 본 연구는 미래의 산업공간에 있어 도시 혁신역량과의 결합이 보다 중요해지고 있으며, 그 내부의 가치 창출 매커니즘이 근본적으로 변화하고 있음을 시사한다.
