This paper studies on the 'self-reference' in Digital Media Art along with the tradition of visual arts. The traces of self-referentiality can be found in the tradition of painting, video art and new media art. I will examine 'multistability' of Magritte, Velazquez, Acimbaldo's works in the Meta-picture theory. The 'self-reference' in several video artists' works such as Peter Campus, Vito Acconci is based on 'narcissism'. As such, I will try to apply the mirror theory in the visual art to both the paintings and the video art works. In 'self-reference' of experimental films, I will also study on the self-consciousness of the camera as a media. One of the important subjects in new media art would be the question between the reality and the virtuality. This question responds 'the mirror world' or new perception of time/space which is called "Meta-verse" and the process of self-reproduction (self-replication) or self-reference through the existence of avatar. Analyzing the avatar will be the expectation of the future of relationships between body and media. It will be studied that changing of the reproduced image era to the generated image era has the influences with subjects and processes of perception. Throughout the multilateral analyses of 'self-reference' in the aspect of cognitive science, media theory, psychoanalysis, sociology and so on, the question of "who I am" and "how I see the world" ultimately construes the history of conception, the 'self-reference'.
