Korea has witnessed a rapid growth of suicides in the late 1990s and its suicide rate has reached the top level since early 2000s. However, previous investigations regrading the effects of suicide reports on actual suicides have been limited and it is not well known why the suicide rate has increased in recent years in Korean society. This study aimed to verify whether the media coverage of suicides is associated with a rise in actual suicides in Korea. Data were available on 6,831 suicide-related items appearing in Korean newspapers between January 2000 and December 2008. The media includes 11 national dailies including three major Korean newspapers-Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo and Donga Ilbo. These data were combined with 61,926 actual suicides for males and 30,127 for females during the same period. To analyze the relationship between media reports of suicides and completed suicides, regression analyses were conducted using the monthly number of suicides for males and females as dependent variables and the monthly number of suicide-related news stories in newspapers, the monthly number of divorce, jobless rate and the coincident economic index as independent variables, respectively. The results showed that a rise in suicide reports by newspapers is followed by an increase in actual suicides for males and females. But it is found that economic indicators such as the coincident index and jobless rate do not have an impact on actual suicides for males and females as well. The Granger causality tests revealed that the monthly number of suicide-related news is a Granger-cause of the monthly number of actual suicides for females, while no evidence of causal relationship between the number of suicide news stories and the number of suicides for males was found.
