The notion ‘cultural contents’ comes from the cultural situation of Korea. We should therefore be responsible for the notion that we created. We should provide a theoretical basis and demonstrate that it is a feasible academic field. We cannot do this by simply following and introducing Western theoretical arguments. It is to be suggested that a unified theory of the Eastern-Western perspectives needs to be established in the cultural contents studies. Upon the recognition of these issues, I try to define the notions — ‘contents’, ‘culture’, ‘cultural contents’ and ‘cultural contents studies’ in a new light. First of all, I define ‘contents’ as “all things that are shared and communicated among human beings in society and nature.” I define ‘culture’ as “free communications and their products of human beings as ‘Inter-esse (sai-jonjae)’ who communicate with other beings using signs and symbols.” Namely, ‘culture’ is human communication, and ‘contents’ is what is being communicated. ‘Cultural contents’ then could be defined as “all things created for their better lives and the expressions of themselves by human beings as cultural beings using signs and symbols in the course of their communications with other human beings and non-human beings.” In a nutshell, ‘cultural contents’ is “everything (things and events) that is created by human beings as cultural beings.” Finally, I address the peculiarity of ‘cultural contents studies’ as an academic field which studies cultural contents. In the literal meaning of the words, cultural contents studies is a combined academic field. It crosses over and pierces into the boundaries between traditional academic fields and it studies theoretically and systematically all the activities as cultural beings and their products of experts and non-experts from all fields — what is thought and expressed; communicated and exchanged; mediated and conveyed; planned and connected; remembered and represented; built and decorated; played and enjoyed; transformed and converted; carried and filled; and circulated and disseminated. It is an interdisciplinary field of study or ‘Inter-studies (sai-hakmun)’ in the sense that all the academic fields that are directly relevant to human beings as cultural beings. Namely, humanities, aesthetics, sociology, engineering, educational studies, and management studies are closely connected under the cultural contents studies.
