Mothers’ Employment Experience Surrounding a First Childbirth in South Korea: An Application of Group-based Trajectory Model원문보기

A large body of previous studies on female employment has aimed to understanding the cause and outcome of women’s employment at a time or surrounding an event. Further, most of them have a tendency of identifying two groups, employment versus nonemployment. Such a dichotomous identification tends to ignore continuous movement between employment and non- or unemployment and to oversimplify women’s work patterns over the life cycle. This research analyzes the trajectory of women’s employment surrounding a first childbirth. By applying the group-based trajectory method(Nagin, 1999), this study aims to identifying the group trajectories based on women’s experience- employment and nonemployment- during the period from the entry into a first pregnancy through childrearing up to 4 years after a first birth and investigates the determinants of the membership to each group. According to the results, women are likely to have five distinctive groups from employment patterns(continuously out, continuously in, exit at a birth, exit after a birth, entry after a childbrith) and over 50 percent of women belong to the group of ‘continuously out.’ Furthermore, the results from the multinomial logit analysis highlight that women with college education or more are more likely than other women to belong to the group of ‘continoulsy in’ and even when highly educated women leave from the labor market upon a first childbirth, they are more likely than other women to exit from the market at the time of a first birth or after 12 months from the birth. Highly educated women from recent cohort, in particular, are more likely than other women to follow a trajectory of ‘continuously in’ than a trajectory of ‘continuously out.’ However, women who gave a birth at later age are likely to experience career interruption than work continuity. These findings suggest that women from younger cohort are likely to continue to work surrounding a birth, but, on the contrary to the idea that a birth at later age would lead to a stronger work commitment among women, a significant number of women still experience work interruption due to a chidbirth. This may highlight that the conflict between work and family life plays a significant role in shaping the timing and the patterns of employment over the life cycle among Korean women.
