Being born anew as a modern city in the 1960s - 1970s period, Seoul has been a juncture of symbolic importance, which has given a glimpse on all the social phenomena occurring across the nation. Korean literature of this time captures modern urbanization of Seoul boosted by rapid capitalization and its consequences for daily lives, and thereby shows how literary imagination participated in the social formation of Seoul and turned it into the city of reality. Against this backdrop, this study deals with the relations between the recreation method of literature and the formation of Seoul by examining symbolization and discussion of the city in the 1960s and the 1970s in the social and geographical contexts. To this end, this study will focus on the period from 1961 through 1979 when the changes of Seoul and socio-geographical significance of literary imagination became clear, and divide this period into three phases according to the changes of recreation methods in relation to the real changes that took place in Seoul. From 1961 to 1966, when the foundation of Seoul as a modern city was laid, Seoul had almost the same geographical boundary that it does now. The laws of urban planning and construction were newly established as a physical and a legal basis for the birth of modern Seoul. However, the authority and the influence of the government was still too weak in the face of enormous power and desire of people, and Seoul still remained in a transitional status where the business area was mixed with the residential area. Despite the seemingly extended geographical boundary, people's notion of Seoul was limited to the area where they could reach by walk and many places within the cities were recognized only through reminiscing them from the history rather than as a part of the new value system. It was not the political power of a strong government, but the yearnings of people who rushed to Seoul and their notion about Seoul that changed the meaning and the role of the city in early and mid 1960s. Literary texts about this period played their role in making fictional images of Seoul to capture the public desire as well as in creating the new images of the city. The texts depicting the admiration and the yearning for Seoul portray the population concentration from mid-1950s aesthetically. The description of the youth who missed Seoul from outside the city provides emotional and literary basis for justifying blind adoration for Seoul. Meanwhile, other texts are about newcomers who fit their lives into the images and the lifestyle of native Seoulites. These texts show how these newcomers made Seoul their own home. By letting Seoul and provinces exchange the lives of their own people, these texts strengthened the hierarchy between Seoul and provinces.Literature of the 1960s and 1970s reveals the opposite feelings of despair and hope experienced by newcomers to the city in different situations such as daily routines, private spaces, streets and cultural places. In these texts, slums where people from provinces or North Korea lived are the space of despair and agony, while the downtown and some special places are the space arousing expectations for realizing economic, cultural and sexual desires. Literary texts recreates Seoul as a space where even the disadvantaged can satisfy their sexual and cultural desires, and thereby justifies yearnings for Seoul and repeatedly emphasizes the superiority of Seoul to provinces. At the same time, however, these texts depicts the newcomers who wanted to become real Seoulites as the real identity and mainstream of the lives in Seoul, while regarding native Seoulites as being isolated from the changes that Seoul was going through. By doing so, they contributed to creating imaginary faces of Seoulites. Some texts adopt critical approach to the possibilities and uncertainties of Seoul and shows people's desires for the economic prosperity promised by the capitalism. They compares Seoul to Harlem and points out how the traditional city was violated in the name of development.Literary texts began to recognize that the changes of Seoul were the process of stratification and privatization of privileges in the period of 1966-1971 when the government-led strong development drive brought about dramatic changes to the city of Seoul and the daily lives of those living in the city. Building on the first economic development plan, the second stage of the development was kicked off in 1966 and the capitalistic principles penetrated the city life with Kim Hyun-ok, then mayor of Seoul, pushing for reckless development campaign and altering the landscape of the city. Fictions of the time describes how Seoul moved toward the new and unfair rules of competition by reproducing the phenomena such as expansion, stratification and acceleration in view of people's geographic sense. The social changes witnessed in Seoul in this period were viewed as 'strengthening of the center.' With places of routines being mixed with concentration of commerce, culture, trend and consumption, the literary narrations are streaming along the space into the very center of Seoul and reproducing it as the symbolic core where enormous resources were flowing in. At the same time, literature reveals the influence of overall rearrangement of the city and economic prosperity behind it on private spaces. Accordingly, inner conflicts resulting from the rearrangement became diverse and the stratification of the mid-low class and the consequent division of private spaces became clear.Literary texts help understanding the meaning of dominant ideologies of then government's policies in view of spatial changes by pointing out that the isolation of general public in the process of development and modernization. These texts reveal how the government's system based on control over time and space suppressed the fear and anxiety. Permanent curfew and temporary lifting of it on Christmas Eve demonstrates the government-control over time and space, and class differences in Seoul. These were in line with redevelopment of the downtown and expansion of the outskirts, showing how the spaces within the city were distributed inequally among different classes. Other texts show the inconceivable way people experienced the changes in Seoul and the fantasy of reality above art as well as the meta-reflection to the cognition of understanding the fantasy. Literary texts also focus on the Seoul's loss of traditional features and its becoming placeless. Generally speaking, fictions during the period of 1966 to 1971 recognize the government drive for construction of new networks and for the rearrangement of citizens and spaces caused stratification within the city, occupation of spaces by the privileged and aggravation of ahistoricity, and added critical voices against the changes that Seoul was undergoing. However, from 1971 to 1979, the space within and the structure of Seoul became rearranged again and the characteristics of Seoul as a social space in literatures also changed. In 1970s, Seoul acquired the features of a modern city that it presently has and new centers were designated within and out of the city. While the development drive in the past was focused on the north of the river Han-gang or Gangbuk area, in 1970s development projects taking advantage of various privileges were concentrated on the southern part of Seoul, changing the cultural, geographical and economic landscape of the city. The development of the south indicates the shift of focus in the rearrangement of the space and the population to the creation of a new center. At the same time, as the hierarchy that divided Seoul and satellite cities became tangible, so did class conflicts among different spaces. Literary texts of 1970s reveal the new spatial order established within the city. In particular, the development of the south or Gangnam area gave people a new perspective on a city as a space producing economic value. In these texts, the newly born area of Gangnam seemed strange and unfamiliar, but it was the very space of economic and cultural wealth that the general public came to yearn for. Meanwhile, the north or Gangbuk was degraded into an underdeveloped and stagnant district. The degradation of Gangbuk demonstrates the concentration of the government interest and resources on Gangnam and the newly established criteria for evaluation of city districts.Literature of 1970s shows how Seoul began to rule the neighboring cities as a center in a different meaning. Some texts typically describe the sense of humiliation experienced by people in one of the satellite cities to demonstrate the dependency of those cities on Seoul. Other stories describe the spatial division within Seoul as class consciousness. For example, they depict a slum as a field of class strife and turns Seoul into a space of social and political implications. The most outstanding feature of Seoul captured by writers of this period was the struggles over culture, education, tastes and consumption that took place in the city. For instance, these writers combined the spatial characteristics of Gangnam with various aspects such as culture, education and hygiene and adopted a distinction system aggravating the divergence and conflicts among classes. The description of lives in an apartment shows how the desire of the middle class became clear by two opposite systems of assimilation and cultural distinction. Some texts describing the consuming trend among college students as inclination to be different see Seoul as a space of consumption full of social and political implications. As we discussed above, Korean literary texts written in the 1960s and the 1970s capture the urbanization and the changes of lives caused by rapid capitalization, and thereby show how literary imagnation contributed to the creation of Seoul as a social space and turned it into a space of reali...
