The effort to generate new values in this age of digital technology characterized by rapid changes in information and knowledge demands transformations not only in the sociocultural and educational spheres but also specifically in the field of arts and culture education. One of the greatest transformations is emphasis on integration and consilience among different fields which has impacted the field of arts and culture, giving birth to the practice of arts and culture education. Another important factor for the transformation is digital technology actively utilized in all spheres, which, also becomes a challenging factor for the field of arts and culture education. In this context, this study purposed to present a new teaching-learning approach for the field of arts and culture education, called "Music Technology- Based Learning"(hereafter, MTBL), which is to, first, take interdisciplinary approaches combining various subjects in the field of arts and culture education, and, adopting music technology as a learning tool, conduct classes within self-directed learning environment. Two case studies were conducted to examine the educational effects of the MTBL approach: two cases with differing backgrounds and differing levels (an after-school class in elementary school and a liberal arts course in university). In the case of the elementary school class, the research methods were consisted of pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire surveys, daily music charts, mind maps derived from 3 sessions, and post-interviews, while in the case of the university liberal arts course, in addition to the methods listed above, evaluation sheets regarding self-directed learning capabilities before and after the classes, and reflective journals after each class, and in-depth interviews with ten voluntary learners after the class were used as methods for data collection. In both the case studies, the results of the MTBL classes showed positive changes in terms of both the degrees of emotional sensibilities of the learners and of the embrace of music in everyday life. Especially, the case of the university course highlighted improved self-directed learning capabilities and creativity. According to the above results, the research confirmed the potential of MTBL as a new teaching and learning methodology in the arts and culture education, in which, ‘creative activity’ utilizing ‘music technology’ is considered by learners to be attractive. In conclusion, considering the current circumstances in which there is a lack of teaching and learning methodologies which reflect the unique, specialized nature and the intrinsic originality of the field of arts and culture education, it is deemed that by accumulating more case studies applying MTBL in practice to a wider variety of targets and situations, MTBL will serve the role of an important new teaching and learning methodology for the arts and culture education field.
