This paper studies how to develop a curriculum which permits children to experience historical events and improve their imagination through process drama. Kim (1997) defines historical imagination as the ability to understand the inside of people involved in a historical event by investigating the structure of the event and having an empathy with them through logical thought process. I adopt his definition of historical imagination in my paper, and classify it into two categories: structural imagination and empathetic comprehension. I restructure the steps of structural imagination, which is introduced by Dickinson, Gard and Lee (1978) and Kim (1994), into a new series of six steps in understanding historical events, and modify it to be applicable to this study. In addition, a series of steps in empathetic comprehension by Ashby and Lee (1987) is applied to this study with an example by Kim (1997). Moreover, I discuss how to apply the concept and methodology of process drama in class. I examined the influence of process drama in 6th grade history class for the time span of three years (2008~ 2010). In 2008, from students' notes and class presentation materials, I confirmed that students could empathize themselves into the positions of people involved in historical events. This result made me confidently believe that process drama can develop students' historical imagination, which became an important motivation for me to start this study. In 2009, I employed process drama in classes more frequently than the previous year. During this time period, I analyzed the efficiency of classes based on surveys, students' notes and presentation materials. From this analysis, I find that process drama provides students opportunity to experience an empathy with people in the events, and motivates them to concentrate on class. Additionally, experience in year 2009 bolstered the efficiency of applying process drama to classes in the subsequent year. In 2010, I corrected for the errors that I experienced in the previous couple of years to construct more structurally concrete methodology so that students can understand historical events from the point of view of people involved in those events. Moreover, I investigate the response by students based on the series of steps in imaginary understanding of historical events and empathetic comprehension. (To reduce bias and errors, I compared these steps that I classified in this study with the ones defined by another colleague teacher, and agreed on a compromise resolution.) As a result, I could confirm that process drama enabled students to develop their ability of using imagination to understand historical events, which means that they had an advanced step in imaginary understanding of historical events. This result is due to the students' structural imagination ability which was enhanced while they experienced historical events and analyze the structure of the events in process-drama-equipped classes. However, I could hardly find that the improvement in empathetic comprehension is outstanding. To figure out the reason for this result, I analyzed the response by students and concluded that it is hard to observe the true change of steps in their empathetic comprehension, because they change their points of views in regard to the familiarity and contents of historical events, which affects empathetic comprehension. Even though I could not find a significant advance of steps in empathetic comprehension for the students in higher steps, I observed a more substantial advance of steps for the students in lower steps. This result suggests that students experienced cognitive empathy in class by standing in another's shoes. Moreover, from the analysis of students' notes and descriptive survey, I confirm that they experienced definitive empathy which is to feel the emotion of people involved in historical events. In addition, I find that the adoption of process drama in history classes increased the level of students' interest in social studies. Therefore, I conclude that process drama in history class not only motivates students to participate in classroom, but also improves their imagination in historical events by facilitating their empathy with people involved in the events.
