The reemployment of retirees has been emerging as one of grave social issues due to our country's rapid turning into an aging society and the unstable labor market. Outplacement is drawing attention from the public as one of possible solutions, and it's important to test the effect of outplacement. Specifically, what adult learners learn from outplacement service should be taken into account, and their employability should be taken into consideration at the same time when the effect of outplacement is checked. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the characteristics of outplacement programs and the transformative learning of retired adult learners to their employability, which is the ultimate goal of outplacement service. Three research questions were posed: 1. What are the characteristics(usefulness and appropriateness) of outplacement programs, the level of the transformative learning of retired outplacement program participants and their employability? 2. What influence do the characteristics of retired outplacement program participants exert on the characteristics of the outplacement programs, the level of their transformative learning and their employability? 3. What influence do the characteristics of outplacement programs and the level of the transformative learning of retired outplacement program participants exert on their employability? The subjects in this study were the retirees who participated in outplacement programs at an outplacement service center. A survey was conducted to address the research questions. The instrument used to check the characteristics of the outplacement programs in which the retirees participated was Lee Yong-jae(2011)'s inventory, and the instrument used to evaluate their transformative learning was developed in this study. The instrument used to assess their employability was Johnson(2001)'s Employability Inventory. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, the characteristics of the retirees involving gender, age, economic status, professionalism and career had a significant impact on the characteristics of the outplacement programs in which they participated, and their characteristics affected the level of their transformative learning and employability in a significant way as well. Second, the retirees considered themselves to be better employable when the outplacement programs in which they participated were more useful and more appropriate at the same time. Third, the higher level of transformative learning in the sociolinguistic domain, the psychological domain and the epistemic domain led to better employability. The findings of the study had the following implications: First, the effects of outplacement programs hinged on the characteristics of retired program participants. Therefore outplacement programs should be designed in consideration of the diverse characteristics of retirees. Second, an outplacement program should be regarded as a system, and the mutual influence among outplacement programs, learning and employability which are respectively the input, the process and the output should be taken into account when outplacement programs are prepared. Third, outplacement programs should be successful enough to be of practical use for the reemployment of retirees, and their degree of difficulty and workload should be appropriate as well. Fourth, outplacement programs should be prepared to positively change the mind-set of retirees about themselves, society and occupation to facilitate their self-directed adjustment to post-retirement environments that require them to play new roles, to satisfy new expectations from others or to have a new job.
