This study explores the interaction of North Korean workers with their South Korean supervisors at the work place and shows the (differing) perceptions of both regarding obstacles in the work life of North Korean defectors. To fully understand the problems defectors face in adapting to the South Korean society I assessed understanding of both North and South Koreans on their daily interactions with each other. The working place was conceptualized as "contact zone" and a qualitative case study was done from the perspective of mutual-culturalism. Subjects of study were selected according to their working conditions. 5 persons each were chosen from South Korean supervisors and North Korean workers with whom in-depth interviews were done. In order to contextualize different perceptions of the two groups, I introduced several narratives of the interaction process between both parties. First, at the beginning of their interactions South Korean supervisors held expectations and concerns regarding the North Korean workers, while the workers were largely felt pressure to perform well with doubts whether they can do so. Second, during conflicts both perceived the problem differently. While supervisors perceived North Koreans as hard to understand, North Koreans felt discriminated and prejudiced wondering whether "they ignore us because we are North Koreans." Third, both parties overcome these disputes through negotiation. Supervisors stressed that they should "understand and embrace" North Korea workers more. North Korean workers increased their efforts in order to "become good South Korean citizens." Finally, through disputes and negotiations they felt success and limitations. Contrary to the South Korean supervisors who stressed that they still were not satisfied with the workers, the North Korean workers gained more confidence and were ready for a new challenge. It was found that supervisors and workers have different priorities in their perceptions of the obstacles to a better adaptation of North Korean defectors to the South Korean work place. According to the view of supervisors, individual factors like attitudes, lack of skills and interpersonal relations were the main factors impeding the working relationship. North Korean workers stressed the socio-cultural factors like discrimination and prejudice by the South Korean society, unfamiliarity with South Korean working conditions and interpersonal relations next to their own lack in expertise. Regarding the origin of those obstacles, supervisors claimed that they stem largely from the overly paternalistic and excessively supportive system and the "socialist" working culture in the North. North Korean workers stressed the money centered support systems in South as well as differences between both countries' working cultures including language, communication style and the form to settle disputes. In conclusion, the differences in perceptions regarding obstacles in the working relationship between supervisors and workers have to be acknowledged and should be understand from the view point of mutual-culturalism.
