The objective of this study was to determine the effects of physically effective neutral detergent fiber (peNDF) content in total mixed ration (TMR) on feed intake, chewing activity, digestibility in fattening heifer. The experiment was designed as a replicated 3×3 Latin square using twelve fattening heifer (Bos taurus coreanae). Fattening heifer were offered one of three diets (high, medium, and low peNDF) obtained by different mixing time (3, 10 and 25 min.) for same TMR feed. The peNDF content of TMR was determined by multiplying the proportion of DM retained in 1.8 mm screen of Penn State Particle Separator (PSPS) to dietary NDF content. The peNDF1.18 contents of the diets were 30.36, 29.20 and 27.19% for the high, medium and low diets respectively (p<0.05). Dry matter intake was not affected by peNDF content in TMR. However increase in peNDF content of TMR resulted in linearly increase linearly the number of chews in eating and ruminating (P<0.05), and consequently increase number of total chews (P<0.05). Total weight gain in the high peNDF group was significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of the medium and low peNDF groups. However, those between medium and low peNDF groups had not difference. Feed conversion ratio was decrease by increased the peNDF content (12.39, 13.10 and 14.03 respectively). Increase in peNDF content of TMR increase linearly the digestibility of dry matter, ash, ether extract, crude protein, crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber (P<0.05). However digestibility of crude protein was not affected by peNDF content in TMR. These results indicated that peNDF affects digestibility and chewing activity. Consequentially, peNDF content of TMR should be considered to improve nternal availabilities such as feed efficiency, digesitibility, body weight gain, and performance in fattening heifers.
