Effects of an Empathy Education Program Using SNS Feedback on Empathy Competence and Prosocial Behavior in Children at Risk for Emotional Behavioral Disorder and Their Typically Developing Peers원문보기

The problem of teenage and school violence is currently increasing. Violence, which results from an absence of communication and empathy, is used as a means of problem solving by students who cannot find other ways to convey their thoughts or process the feelings of others. One of the ways to overcome this problem is to develop students empathy competence. Empathy competence helps students build social relations successfully, plays an important role in self-realization, and causes prosocial behaviors. It is a crucial value for children at risk for emotional behavioral disorders(EBD), who have behavioral problems, low self-esteem, and poor interpersonal relations. Various programs for building empathy competence have been developed and utilized in schools. However, these programs have been limited to children without disabilities. Thus, this study focused on children at risk for EBD. Compared with children without disabilities, children at a risk for EBD have narrow interpersonal relations and thus have fewer opportunities to experience empathy; thus, the program proposed here would provide them with opportunities to communicate using SNS. This study implemented an Empathy Education Program Using SNS Feedback, which targeted classrooms composed of both children at risk for EBD and children without disabilities. The results revealed changes in empathy competence and prosocial behavior. Fifth-graders in two different classrooms at J elementary school in Seoul participated in the study, with each class comprising one child at risk for EBD and 50 children without disabilities. The experimental group children were exposed to 13 sessions of the Empathy Education Program Using SNS during the creativity-building time slot in their school curriculum. The sessions lasted 40 minutes and were held twice a week. Reading education, a special project in J elementary school, was given to the children in the compare group during the creativity-building time slot. With a pre- and post-test compare-group experimental design, this study used covariance analysis to verify the presence or absence of a significant difference between the two groups in empathy competence and prosocial behavior. The degree of change in empathy competence and prosocial behavior was also examined in the children at risk for EBD in each group. The results of this study are as follows: First, a meaningful difference was found in empathy competence between the experimental group, which participated in the Empathy Education Program Using SNS, and the compare group, which did not. However, sub-factor analysis showed no meaningful differences in cognitive, emotional, or social reactive empathy. Second, a significant difference was found between the experimental group and the compare group in their changes in prosocial behavior. Sub-factor analysis revealed meaningful differences in helping, cooperating, and comforting but no significant differences in sharing. Third, a comparison of children at risk for EBD in both the experimental and compare groups revealed no distinct differences, because the degrees of improvement in the pre- and post-test in all dependent variables were similar. These results show that the Empathy Education Program using SNS had a positive influence on improving empathy competence and prosocial behavior in all the general classes, including the ones with children at risk for EBD. Compared with the at-risk child in the compare group, the at-risk child in the experimental group did not show any significant change, showing that this mediation had no positive effect on the child. However, this study is meaningful because the empathy education was conducted in classrooms with both children at risk for EBD and children without disabilities and implemented in the context of the regular school curriculum. In addition, this study showed that children at risk for EBD needed long-term intervention, unlike typically developing children, who showed positive effects even from short-term mediation. It will be necessary to both develop a program using SNS feedback with family and implement personalized intervention in any follow-upstudy.
