This study identified the relevance between the intake of high-caffeine drinks and health behavior of middle and high school students based on the primitive data of the Tenth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey 2014, which has been conducted on a yearly basis since 2005 from Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to see the status and trends of the health behavior of the adolescents in Korea. The study aimed to provide the basic data to provide the education and establish the policy to create a healthy dietary environment for intake of proper drinks and proper food choices by identifying the health issues from high-caffeine drink intake of the adolescents.
The data was analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 (Statistics Package for Social Science Ver 18.0, SPSS Inc.) statistical program. It calculated the frequency and percentage to figure out the general characteristics and health behavior, and conducted the χ2 test to identify the health behavior of the adolescents from gender, level of school, academic score, financial status, body weight perception, stress level perception and adequacy of sleep hours. To figure out the correlation between the intake of high-caffeine drinks and relevant factors (school level, gender, academic score, financial status, residential form, academic background of father, academic background of mother, average weekly allowance, intake of carbonated drinks, intake of sweet drinks, drinking experience, smoking experience, body health perception, body weight perception, stress level perception, adequacy of sleep hours, depression/sorrow/despair, and happiness level) using the Pearson's correlation analysis.
The major research findings are summarized as follows:
First, 11.9% of the total research subjects drank high-caffeine drinks; 74.2% drank carbonated drinks; and 82.5% drank sweet drinks, indicating that the subjects drank carbonated drinks and highly sweet drinks. The subjects had more experiences of drinking alcohol than smoking as 47.2% of the subjects had the experience of alcohol drinking and 19.4% had the smoking experience, and most of the adolescents perceived that they were healthy as 70.9% subjects responded positively for their health. In terms of the body weight perception, 38.6% of the adolescents perceived that they were fat and 37.1% felt that they were stressed out and 43% said that they felt stressed a little, indicating that most of the adolescents were stressed out. 41.2% of the subjects answered positively for the adequacy of sleep hours, indicating that the sleep hours of the adolescents was not adequate. The subjects rarely experienced depression, sorrow and despair and 63.6% subjects perceived happiness, showing that most of the adolescents perceived that they were happy.
Second, in terms of the differences in health behavior depending on the general characteristics, the male students drank more high-caffeine drinks, especially with low academic scores and good financial status. The male students and high school students drank more carbonated drinks, particularly with low academic scores and bad financial status. In terms of sweet drink intake, the male students and high school students drank more sweet drinks, especially with low academic scores and moderate financial status. The male students and high school students had more experiences of drinking alcohol and smoking especially with low academic scores and bad financial status. When it comes to body health perception, the students perceived that they were healthy in every aspect of the general characteristics. In terms of body weight perception, the female students and high school students perceived that they were fat, especially with low academic scores and bad financial status. The female students and high school students felt more stressed especially with low academic scores and bad financial status. In terms of adequacy of sleep hours, the female students and high school students answered inadequate, especially low academic scores and bad financial status.
Third, the differences in the intake of high-caffeine drinks depending on the health behavior, the intake of high-caffeine drinks depending on the body weight perception was high when the subjects recognized that they were fat, and the intake of high-caffeine drinks depending on stress level perception was high when the subjects felt stressed a lot, and the intake of high-caffeine drinks depending on the adequacy of sleep hours was high when the sleep hours were inadequate.
Fourth, in terms of the correlation between the intake of high-caffeine drinks and relevant factors, the subjects drank more high-caffeine drinks as they had lower academic scores, academic background of parents and body health perception and body weight perception and more inadequate sleep hours. The subjects drank more high-caffeine drinks as they had more average weekly allowance, drank carbonated and sweet drinks, more experienced drinking alcohol and smoking, more stressed out in daily life, and more experienced depression, sorrow and despair.
According to the research findings, the adolescents drank high-caffeine drinks, carbonated and sweet drinks to improve concentration while studying, release thirst, and recover fatigue. As they were highly interested in their appearance, they perceived that they were fat and experienced depression, sorrow, and despair so that there should be the guidance in connection with the overall diet and health behavior. Since the intake of high caffeine drinks may lead to the bad diet such as bad choices of snack, it is required to provide the education to encourage the intake of healthy drinks and improve the ability to choose healthy foods.
