Mathematics is study that expresses the truth and pattern hiding in various phenomena and situations connected with the real life as the promised signals and definition common in all countries to express logically with the mathematical language. Therefore, being able to understand math well means one’s ability to exactly understand the mathematical concepts and principles and to solve the question with the logical thinking by engrafting them into the daily life is excellent. As the use of math increases, the importance of math is increasing more and more. Although many universities are designating university math subject as the required liberal art for the students from science and engineering accordingly, more and more students short of the basic knowledge on math or feeling difficulty in math are avoiding or giving up math so universities are having great difficulty in operating the university math subject. The class method by Flipped Learning, which is well known for representing a positive effect in terms of the interest in study and the achievement of the current students by focusing on the discussion and presentations through the interaction in the classroom after learning the class contents online through the video in advance, is being suggested as the alternative class method to the students avoiding or giving up basic mathematics. Flipped Learning is proving its educational effectiveness as the result of the advance researches applying to various fields of different targets. However, several problems are being pointed out in achieving the educational purpose despite several positive class application cases; the students do not watch the video in advance or do not interact as actively as intended. The problem is it is hard to arouse the students’ interest only by the video lecture. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to research the effectiveness about whether applying PBL-based Flipped Learning(herein Flipped PBL) that engrafted PBL into existing Flipped Learning as an alternative plan for this problem of Flipped Learning could complement the problems of Flipped Learning. It was intended to compare the differences of the class method following the degree of academic achievement by dividing the general lecture-type classes according to the level of academic achievement in comparison with these two class methods and applying each. In this study, 900 freshmen in D University were divided into upper class of 450 students and lower class of 450 ones throughout 6 weeks and both classes were divided into 3 groups by 150 students: experimental group, control group A, and control group B. The Flipped PBL class was applied to the experimental group, Flipped Learning class to control group A, and existing lecture-type class to control group B, and the change of academic achievement and the change of interest level were divided according to the level of the advance knowledge to compare and research the effectiveness. As for the collection of research data, the advance & ex-post paper test, midterm exam, and final exam of total 6 times were conducted in all groups and the change of academic achievement was researched through these results, and the interest change among groups was researched through the result of advance and ex-post survey on the total 6-time introspection log and the interest study. The analysis result of this study is summarized as follows. First, when it came to the upper class that the advance knowledge was high in the analysis of the advance/ex post unit test result on the improvement of the academic achievement following the class method, midterm exam result, and final exam result, the score of experimental group to which Flipped Learning was applied increased the highest followed by control group A to which Flipped Learning was applied, and control group B to which the general lecture class was applied. However, when it came to the lower class, the group of which advance knowledge was low, the score of the experimental group to which Flipped PBL was applied increased highest followed by control group B to which the general lecture class was applied and control group A to which the Flipped Learning class was applied, which was different from the result of upper class. This result shows Flipped PBL method is most effective in improving the academic achievement regardless of the group with high advance knowledge or low advance knowledge while showing the Flipped Learning class can show the lower achievement than one of the general lecture class in the group with the low advance knowledge. It is because the activity of this class was not conducted properly because the assignment activity of this class was done in the situation the advance learning was never conducted as the students felt bored at the advance video learning and did not come in the lower class with low advance knowledge. Therefore, what needs to be considered certainly when designing the class is to apprehend the learners’ disposition well and design the class in accordance with those learners’ characteristic. Second, in the result of the coding analysis of introspection log and the statistical analysis of advance/ex post questionnaire for researching the change of interest improvement following the class method, the advance learning was conducted well because the video constitution including PBL assignment presentation was interesting regardless of the upper class and lower class in the experimental group to which the Flipped PBL class was applied. Therefore, students answered it was greatly helpful for the interest in math and the academic achievement because they could conduct the group discussion and presentations through the interaction by actively participating in the PBL assignment given by this class. When it came to control group A to which Flipped Learning was applied, as for the upper class, students answered that although the video was boring, the change of learning method was interesting and the advance learning was helpful in class so they did not have big trouble in performing the assignment, as for the lower class, they answered that as the video was too boring, they never conducted the advance learning and the assignment in class was more difficult because they did not conduct the advance learning and they hardly interacted. Most of them showed the negative opinions. When it came to control group B of the general lecture method, most students felt without distinction of upper class from lower class that math was generally hard and they should study math hard, and it was analyzed there was no change in the interest improvement. While it was analyzed that Flipped PBL class could complement the problems on math which appeared in the general lecture class in terms of interest and could maximize the learners’ interest by PBL assignment resulting in a great effect, it was confirmed the boringly constituted video and the Flipped Learning class not considering the learners could never resolve the problems on the interest decline in the existing lecture-type class in the group with the low academic achievement. It was confirmed through this study result that if the Flipped PBL class could raise the level of participation and the learning motive of students by complementing the problems of Flipped Learning, the level of interest and the academic achievement could be improved. Therefore, Flipped PBL is expected to be applied widely through this study as a teaching method which lets many students from science and engineering field not avoid math but feel interest to improve the academic achievement.
