English is a vital tool for global communication; however, it is rare for elementary school students living in country sides to find an opportunity to speak English for everyday use. The students study English to improve their school grades, and their studies are mostly unrelated to English learning motivation. Under these circumstances, the author conducted an action research study with English storybooks to enhance English learning motivation of 25 sixth-grade students. The purposes of the study were to positively influence learners’ learning motivation by online reading aloud and to identify distinct characteristics in the students’ English learning processes throughout a school semester. The study included participants are 25 sixth-grade students who were enrolled in a classroom at “I” Elementary School, located in a small city of Jeollabuk-do. The students participated in two hours of learning sessions, an hour of a cooperative class with a native English teacher and an hour of ‘English Storybook Class’; each class was conducted 21 times from March till August. In the cooperative class, three separate activities were organized; a native English teacher read ‘English storybooks’ to students, the students re-read the books to the teacher and received feedback, and they watched videos in English. During the English Storybook Class that lasted for 40 minutes, the students chose books of their interests, listened to audio CDs in the books, practiced their pronunciation, recorded their voices, and uploaded them online. A total of 60 English storybooks were used for the Class, and the books were divided into 5 reading levels from kindergartner levels to upper elementary levels. With reference to preliminary research, the storybooks were selected based on fun, readability, and satisfaction so that students at different reading levels can comprehend and feel a sense of accomplishment easily. Before the study, each participant was individually interviewed to investigate the participant’s perception and background knowledge in English, home environment, methods for studying English, etc. Starting in May, short answer surveys and mid-study interviews were carried out to examine changes in the students’ learning motivation. After completing the study in August, post-activity surveys were conducted to find out how the students’ learning motivation were altered through English storytelling activities. Based on the survey results, the participants were separated into A through C Group, and final interviews were carried out over an hour and a half for a focus group that exhibited distinct characteristics among the participants. The results are as follows: First, English learning motivation of A Group increased through a semester-long storytelling activity in which the students read online English storybooks aloud. The A Group members noted that they became interested in English by participating in the activity. They also said, “we want to participate in this activity again,” stressing that their confidence and English skills were greatly improved from the activity. In particular, English learning motivation of JY, a member of the A Group, was positively improved; she commented that she began dreaming of becoming a ‘reporter’ after picturing herself talking to native English speakers in English. Secondly, B Group’s learning motivation was enhanced to a small extent. The B group members demonstrated positive changes in interest and confidence, but their perception toward learning English and basic academic abilities in English did not improve much at the end of the study. DW, a member of the focus group, actively participated in the English storytelling activity to advance her English; however, she continuously felt difficulty in learning English and she could not improve her low basic English abilities. Another focus group member, HM, said that she genuinely started to like English after the study, but her perception toward learning English, which focused on studying ‘moderately,’ did not seem to be affected. Third, C Group showed no change in English learning motivation even though they read online English storybooks aloud for one semester. The C Group members did not hide their negative feelings toward English even after the study and struggled from learning English because of their low basic English abilities and past experiences. They also maintained their perception toward learning English and demonstrated little change in English learning motivation. ZE, a student from the focus group, showed high academic achievement but commented, ‘I study English because I am good at it’ and ‘I dislike English in and of itself.’ She expressed her negative views toward English and kept her perception toward learning English. Another focus group member, BR, could not grow interests in English as he lacked emotional support at home, and he gave up on learning English in the middle of the study because he could not gradually resolve issues with his low basic academic ability in English. The study indicates that it is essential to help elementary school students enjoy, feel confidence, and experience progress in learning English to have a great impact on their English learning motivation. Additionally, teachers need to pay close attention and provide guidance to students who lack clear goals and feel difficulty in studying English. The author hopes to create a learning environment with no academic pressure and competition so that students can enjoy and grow long-lasting interests in English.
