The curriculum of music courses of secondary education in Korea aims to cultivate talented people who have the communication skill to consider and respect others through the recognition of the pluralistic value of culture by enhancing self-expression and forming self-identity by fostering musical emotions and expressive abilities. The Korean education system has been changing and developing alignment with the stream of times. The core of the revised 2015 curriculum is "to cultivate creativity and character education”, with the goal of current education set beyond simply teaching subjects within the curriculum. Among music activities, ensemble activities are prominent collaborative learning and community activities. In an ensemble, different instruments are gathered together to create a harmony and students spend a lot of time and effort to achieve common goals. Therefore, students can feel a sense of belonging through these collective activities, and can foster communality, sharing and consideration for others, and social relationships. Through musical instruments, students can express their thoughts and feelings, experience the aesthetic beauty of music, learn endurance during practices and gain achievement and confidence after performances. However, in spite of the importance of ensembles, activities carried out in actual music classes are limited to one or two classes using instruments such as recorders or ocarinas. In this study, I designed a string ensemble which applies a cooperative learning model focusing on club activities which have more autonomy than regular classes. The song selected for the whole ensemble was the first movement of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik in G Major, K.525 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Concerts for each skill level were also planned with the most skilled team performing Salute d'amour, Op. 12 by Edward Elgar (1857-1934), the second skilled performing Minuet in G major, BWV Anh.114 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and the last group performing Edelweiss by Richard Rodgers (1902-1979). For the theoretical background, the concept, characteristics, model, and educational significance of cooperative learning were examined, and the purpose of club activities and the actual condition of music club activities in the schools were also studied and based on this, a class model for a string ensemble club was designed, applying a cooperative learning model. The types of cooperative learning applied are ‘Cooperative Project’ (CP) types which require collaboration among groups according to the purpose the cooperative activity: Co-op co-op, JigsawⅢ, and LT models. In addition, the composition of Eine kleine Nachtmusik was organized with the first, second and third violin and cello, allowing the viola part to be replaced with the third violin. This was due to the fact that the majority of the strings in the current school club are the violin and cello. This study is comprised of a string ensemble, but if there were a wind musical instrument during club activities, it could be possible to play it according to the range of each instrument. The most important purpose of this club activity is to plan the final class as a voluntary performance, giving students the opportunity to reflect on the meaning that music gives to life and as well as on the significance of voluntary services. Therefore, through this study, it is expected that the students will be given the opportunity to feel the enjoyment of working as one to create a harmony as well as to realize the value of caring for each other and working together, and think deeply about the meaning of music in life.
