The purpose of this study is to investigate the mathematical belief of elementary school preservice teachers and elementary school teachers and to analyze their differences in mathematical belief. These are research questions which this study focuses on in accordance with its stated goal:
1. What is the mathematical belief of the elementary school preservice teachers? 2. What is the mathematical belief of the elementary school teachers? 3. What is the difference between elementary school preservice teachers and elementary school teachers about mathematical belief?
This study used questionnaire survey. 106 elementary school preservice teachers in four majors of D National University of Education in Daegu and 120 elementary school teachers in Daegu responded in the questionnaire. Elementary school preservice teachers are classified by gender and elementary school teachers are classified by gender, major, educational level and career. The questionnaire used in this study is consisted only of the questions related to belief about the nature of mathematics and learning mathematics among the mathematical belief categories developed by TEDS-M. Data collection was done online via google spreadsheet. The results of the belief about the nature of mathematics and learning were divided into sub-belief and analyzed by SPSS program.
Some conclusions could be drawn from results as follows: First, elementary school preservice teachers generally have ‘rules and procedures’ as their belief in the nature of mathematics and no significant difference is found in subcategories of it. There is a strong belief in the ‘inquiry process’ about the belief of learning mathematics and there is a significant difference in the ‘teacher instruction’ category of the subcategories. In other words, the male preservice teachers have a little more ‘teacher instruction’ belief about the learning mathematics than the female ones. Second, elementary school teachers generally regard the nature of mathematics as a ‘inquiry process’ and have a ‘student-led’ belief about the learning mathematics. There is no significant difference of the belief about the nature of mathematics and learning mathematics between the elementary school teachers by gender and majors. In the mathematical belief study of elementary school teachers according to educational level, there is a significant difference in both 'rules and procedures' and 'inquiry process' which are subcategories of belief about the nature of learning mathematics. As a result of post-hoc analysis, 'students or graduates of graduate school of mathematics education' show a difference in beliefs with 'college graduates' and 'students or graduates of general graduate’. Specifically, they have the highest belief in the ‘inquiry process’, and have the lowest belief in ‘rules and procedures’. In comparison of mathematical beliefs of elementary school teachers by career, there is no significant difference between belief about the nature of mathematics and learning mathematics. Third, comparing the mathematical beliefs of elementary school preservice teachers and elementary school teachers, there is no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the 'rules and procedures' subcategories of the nature of mathematics, but there is a significant difference in 'inquiry process’. Elementary school teachers are more likely to agree on 'inquiry process' than elementary school preservice teachers. There is a statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of the belief about mathematics learning, although they show a common tendency to be 'student-led'. On the other hand, there is no difference in 'teacher instruction' category. In other words, it is confirmed that elementary school teachers have higher 'student-led' belief than elementary school preservice teachers.
