This study explored the discipline experiences and the perceptions of discipline among childcare teachers and parents, who have great influence on young children’s development. It examined and compared teachers’ and parents’ perceptions of appropriate discipline methods at childcare centers and homes, as well of inappropriate methods of discipline that may escalate to child abuse. This study sought to gather preliminary data that may help inform ways to reduce conflicts resulting from perceptional differences of child discipline at childcare centers and homes; it also aimed to develop effective discipline methods. Thus in the presented study, 186 childcare teachers at childcare centers located in the Seoul and Gyeonggi Province and 184 parents were asked to complete a self-report survey on child discipline. Frequency analysis, a One-Way ANOVA and post-hoc analysis were used for data analysis. The major findings of the study were as follows. First, 100% of childcare teachers reported as having received child abuse prevention education and 88% as having had experiences of discipline management education. As childcare teachers are mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse, the result revealed that all teachers appropriately received prevention education. However, results showed that childcare teachers’ level of completion of discipline management education was comparatively lower than that of child abuse prevention program. Parents reported as having had experiences of child abuse prevention education at 33.9% and 47.0% for discipline management education, both of which were lower than those of childcare teachers. Although inappropriate methods of discipline could potentially lead to child abuse, data revealed that parents received child abuse prevention education and discipline management education less than the childcare teachers. This result indicated the need for finding ways to provide more opportunities for parents to participate in child abuse prevention education programs and discipline management programs. Second, over 50% of childcare teachers responded as having ‘no experience’ on all items of inappropriate disciplinary practices. As for parent respondents however, only inappropriate emotional and sexual disciplinary practices had over 50% of respondents that reported as having ‘no experience’. As for childcare teachers in particular, 70% of teacher respondents answered ‘no experience’ to emotional disciplinary practices and 80% to sexual disciplinary practices. In other words, the results indicated that childcare teachers had lesser experiences of engaging in inappropriate disciplinary practices compared to the parents, but a higher level of understanding on inappropriate disciplines. Third, the comparative analysis of teachers’ and parents’ perceptions of inappropriate disciplinary practices by agent revealed statistically significant differences in inappropriate physical disciplinary practices, neglect, and sexual disciplinary practices, while there were no statistically significant differences in verbal and emotional disciplinary practices. The results indicated that both childcare teachers and parents perceived the teachers’ inappropriate disciplinary practices at childcare centers to be more inappropriate than parents’ inappropriate disciplinary practices at home. This showed that childcare teachers’ disciplinary practices were more strictly perceived than the ones done at homes. In contrast, the comparative analysis of childcare teacher’ and parents’ perceptions on disciplinary practices conducted at childcare centers and homes showed that parents were likely to perceive parents’ disciplinary measures as ‘(acceptable) disciplinary practices.’ Finally, the perceptions of childcare teachers and parents on discipline methods in specific situations were compared and analyzed. Among the inappropriate discipline methods, the following items were perceived as more inappropriate when done by childcare teachers than by parents:「verbal threat」,「using pejorative words on the child」,「pulling the child」,「inflicting quid-pro-quo physical pain on the child as a consequence of undesirable action」,「pulling the chair」,「separating the child and putting in a forceful time-out」,「deliberately overlooking the child’s behaviors or situations and/or withdrawing provision」,「not securing safety for the child」, and「threatening by accusing of theft and/or ignoring the child」, and「touching private parts without the child’s consent」. This study importantly highlighted that the perceptional differences between childcare teachers and parents on teacher- and parent-initiated disciplinary practices have statistical significance. It contributed to enhancing knowledge with regard to areas of potential conflict between teachers and parents, as the results indicate that disciplinary practices may be differently construed depending on the context(home vs. center). The results of the presented study can be used as preliminary data for designing discipline management programs that support consistency in child discipline, effectively utilizing the home–center connection.
