Secondary school art education lacks an adequate amount of classes to deal with both art appreciation and artistic expression including art history, aesthetics, and criticism. Most of the art education classes currently being taught follow a curriculum based on particular trends from certain time periods, information about famous mainstream artists, and piecemeal knowledge, such as chronological style. Therefore, people studying art are beginning to lose their interest in art history. As a way to overcome this situation, the researcher strived to find new ways to teach the art history appreciation classes in the art education programs in relation to the school field and art museum. The researcher also wanted to focus on actual art museum education.
Since the 21st century, art education has emphasized the need for a new perspective on art history as more and more people have come to accept a new perspective on the world and culture. However, in the contemporary pluralistic society where various nationalities, races, and cultures coexist, there is a question as to whether art education used for cultivating a certain class or a small number of experts still applies to the general public.
Created in Europe during the 18th century, art museums were used as a place of public education due to the collection and curating methods that were being utilized at the museums. This is a critical review of the vast accumulation of data centered on the West over the years and the classification of the data. The researcher would also like to introduce the exhibition of a new tendency and present a methodology of future art history education. Today, the educational functions of museums are on the rise, but direct programs linking schools and museums have not progressed at a smooth enough rate. The secondary education curriculum, revised in 2015, states that students will continue to visit museums, art museums, and exhibition halls more than once a semester. However, there are various limitations that will need to be overcome before these additions can be properly incorporated into the curriculum.
The researcher sampled the work Box in a Valise, 1941 by Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968). Duchamp is known as a pioneer of contemporary art, and he produced the aforementioned piece as a tool to be used for art history appreciation education. The ability to move freely anywhere using the travel valise with images of works of art and photographs of artworks can be interpreted as a symbolic miniaturized museum. The researcher planned the project based on the Box in a Valise by searching for guidance on the appreciation of the new art history classes included in the middle school art education curriculum.
Through the Box in a Valise, project, students will plan an exhibition by devising new topics or finding ways to classify the expression materials and methods. The image of the prepared artwork will then be archived according to the designated exhibition theme and placed in the Box in a Valise. Students will then present their exhibitions. In addition, Amelia Arenas' dialogue-centered appreciation instructional method was applied to the Box in a Valise project. This instructional method provides an opportunity to interpret the relationship between the work and the viewer instead of searching for the defined meaning and artistic value in the work. In other words, the viewers will learn how to view the work and develop an attitude of understanding and respecting the value of cultural diversity.
Activities through the Box in a Valise project can be seen as being linked to the attitudes of exhibition planners and curators today. People studying this subject will experience the exhibition process of reclassifying and arranging the works from a free viewpoint formed through the understanding and interpretation of various works after the research has been completed. Finally, the researcher emphasizes the need for archives as they are considered to be the most important functions of museums. In pamphlets and magazines that can be easily accessed in everyday life, works of art are extracted and archived steadily according to the aesthetic taste and sense of those who want to learn. This will lead to an increase in the interest in works of art and help form a closer relationship between art and life.
This study was limited to the developmental stage of people who have never studied art history because the lessons were limited for a short time due to a small amount of people interested in the subject and the environment. However, the researcher hopes that the appropriate use of the Box in a Valise project, along with the development of systematic teaching methods for art history, will create a broader perspective toward reconstructing new knowledge for the future students of art history. Although emphasis has been placed on on-the-job training in art museums linked to schools, there is also a strong emphasis on the following difficulties that still need to be addressed: the inequality in the community and the class, accessibility of public cultural organizations and art organizations, lack of educational programs, and a passive attitude of relations between schools and museums. Therefore, it is very necessary to improve these conditions through cooperation and discussion between public institutions such as museums and art educational institutes.
