This study aimed to investigate the appropriateness of phonics learning time in children by a study of the achievement how much children could understand phonics learning and whether it was the possible learning for children. To do so, phonics classes were performed for 30 minutes twice a week for 8 months in 62 subjects with 6-year-old children in a kindergarten affiliated with a university in Incheon. Self-initiative learning was performed for the participant children with online phonics program additionally after school. Hence, to monitor the status of phonics learning, login time for online learning and its stage of the participant children were monitored using learning management system of “ABCeggs,” phonics test consisting of 15 questionnaires were performed to investigate the achievement rate, and interest rate in the phonics learning was evaluated. Also, correlation analysis between phonics learning duration and test score in the participant children, correlation analysis between completed lesson step and test score, significance analysis of test score by gender, correlation analysis between the level of phonics test questionnaires and test score, correlation between interest level by questionnaires and test results were performed to analyze their learning status in detail. The results of this study are as follows. First, 6-year-old children can understand the contents of phonics learning and their acquisition is possible. However, it should be the status excluding learning on double consonants and vowels among phonics learning. Upon the results of phonics learning status for 8 months in 6-year-old children, 66% of them acquired the contents of phonics. Although the acquisition rate is not high, it would be higher if the learning was performed excluding learning of double consonants and vowels which showed significantly lowered acquisition rate. Second, phonics learning contents that children did the best were consonant learning while they had difficulty in learning single vowels. In addition, they were good at finding first sound and remaining sound excluding first sound after listening to the vocabularies with repeated end sound learning without exposure of vocabularies. Learning to speak replacing the first sound from the vocabulary with one syllable showed lower understanding than learning to speak combining the sound of consonant/ vowel / consonant. The most difficult learning for 6-year-old children was to make new sound with two consonants and new sound with two vowels. Third, the parts that children showed the interest among the contents of phonics learning were related to most of the children’s interest, demonstrating higher understanding and concentration on the learning contents with higher interest level. The results showed 6-year-old age was a proper timing for phonics learning in children and learning contents should be modified by the learners’ age as their age was younger. Among the contents of phonics learning, learning to make new sound with two consonants and with two vowels showed significantly lower interest level as well as phonics test score, reflecting inappropriateness for 6-year-old children. It is suggested that the teachers teaching phonics to children at the sites should refer to these results when they consider the phonics curriculum.
