The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concept and
principles of CPTED, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design,
and to review relevant legislative trends in different countries.
Moreover, CPTED-applied security activities done by Daegu Police are
reviewed by cases to investigate the overall status of relevant crime
prevention effect, crime safety awareness and crime fear reduction
effects. Ultimately, the research aims to seek for the measures to
activate application of CPTED on police works and to improve public
security satisfaction.
There have been numerous different crime prevention measures in
human history, but none of them was significantly effective. CPTED
suggests a whole new system of crime prevention that is different

from the measures that rely on police force in police patrols and
arrest of criminals. Instead, researches on DPTED are directed to
design crime prevention methods that effectively utilize the
environment.
As a result of analyzing the police activity cases where CPTED is
applied and investigating the responses from the residents, CPTED is
found to be effective in crime prevention and reducing the crime fear
of the residents.
However, there are cases where the CPTED is not optimally applied,
such as cases where accurate analysis of the target region or reflection
of residents’ opinions is disregarded. Thus, proper application of CPTED
that meets the safety needs of the residents is desperately required.
In order to solve the aforesaid problem and lead to an effective
application of CPTED, the followings are necessary: first, professional
CPTED education for polices and support for residents to understand
the concept of CPTED, second systematized and professional
promotion of the relevant project to encourage active participations of
residents, third, efforts to promote active cooperation, such as
information exchange, between the police and local government by
establishing a committee for CPTED projects, and last, securement of
the force for CPTED projects by strengthening the internal capabilities
of the polices.
In order for such CPTED projects to improve the level of satisfaction
of the residents on the public security, a process of collecting and
reflecting the residents’ opinion on the police activities is required.
Accordingly, it is necessary to further systemize the measure of
residential satisfaction level (evaluations of satisfaction on public
security and security awareness), as well as to systemize and specify
