The purpose of this study was to verify that group music therapy is effective as a program for improving emotional intelligence in elementary school lower grades. The subjects of this study were 12 children in elementary school 1st to 2rd grade who were recruited through the C Arts Research Institute located in H area, J City. The program was held twice a week for a total of 16 times, and each session lasted 40 minutes. The research scale is emotional intelligence test for lower grades in elementary school, and the scores before and after the program were analyzed by dividing it into emotional recognition, emotional expression, empathy, and emotional control. In the process, the therapist accompanies himself, and the children sing, sing, and play musical instruments. The post-test was conducted in the same way as the pre-test after all 16 sessions were over. In this study, emotional intelligence scores and sub-area scores were divided into emotional recognition and expression, empathy, emotional utilization, and emotional control, and the scores before and after performing the therapy were analyzed through Cronbach alpha.
The Research Results was are as follows. The pre- and post-emotional intelligence scores of the experimental group that performed the group music therapy increased statistically significantly. The pre- and post-emotional recognition and expression scores of the experimental group that performed the group music therapy were significantly increased. The pre- and post-empathy scores of the experimental group that conducted the group music therapy program increased statistically significantly. The pre- and post-emotional utilization scores of the experimental group that conducted the group music therapy increased statistically significantly. The pre- and post-emotional control scores of the experimental group that performed the group music therapy were statistically significantly increased.
These results confirmed that group music therapy increased emotional intelligence of elementary school students. Furthermore, it shows that it is effective for emotion recognition and expression, emotion empathy, emotion utilization, and emotion regulation. Therefore, it is suggested that group music therapy is needed to improve emotional intelligence of elementary school students.
