The essential purpose of commercial facilities is to generate profits through the sale of goods. Therefore, the existing commercial facilities focused only on the sale of products and tried to display as many products as possible. As modern society changes from material-oriented to experience-oriented, and consumption forms expand from simple consumption to emotional forms, changes are taking place in the physical space of commercial facilities and consumers' needs. Modern commercial facilities seek to satisfy the multi-dimensional experience of brands beyond the one-dimensional consumption needs that correspond to the purchase of products and services. Accordingly, commercial facilities are gradually placing spaces outside of sales and devoting a significant portion of the space for delivering consumer experiences and brand identity. In addition, each brand is proposing its own differentiation strategies so that the brand experience can stimulate consumption.
Brand experience refers to a secondary experience in which consumers respond inherently through this stimulus by giving consumers multiple stimuli related to the brand. Through this experience, brands convey the value they want to appeal to the consumers, and consumers have a positive conception of the brand by gaining experience related to the brand. As the consumer experience becomes more important, commercial facilities are actively utilizing the "brand experience" that can directly respect the value of the brand.
This study recognizes the importance of the brand experience space in commercial facilities and aims to closely analyze the space. Unlike previous studies that conducted qualitative analysis mainly based on photographs and programs, this study attempted to look at the brand experience space from a more architectural perspective, and created a checklist to quantify expression characteristics to enable quantitative analysis as much as possible. The method of this study is as follows. Through theoretical considerations, physical elements (area, arrangement, compartment) and non-physical elements (program, characteristics) of space were derived. Based on this, 18 cases were summarized, and the correlations between elements were compared and analyzed. As a result of theoretical consideration, the spatial composition of commercial facilities can be divided into sales spaces, preliminary sales spaces, and brand experience spaces. And is divided into blocking, psychological, and perceptual divisions according to the method of partitioning the space. Accordingly, the arrangement types of the divided spaces were divided into vertical separation type, horizontal separation type, single-center type, and multi-dispersion type. The concept and expression characteristics of the brand experience space were reorganized into association, non-dailiness, informativeness, dynamics, and interactivity based on previous studies, and internal programs were organized into cultural, product experiences, information, food, and events. As a result of comparative analysis between elements, the opening year, total area, and the ratio of brand experience space area had a proportional relationship, and the space separation was mainly arranged vertically. When looking at the non-physical factors, it was confirmed that in the case of cosmetic brands, the association and informativeness values were high, and in the case of fashion brands, the association and non-dailiness were high. In addition, it was confirmed that the area ratio, opening year, and brand experience space figures showed a proportional relationship.
In conclusion, when planning a brand experience space in commercial facilities, total areas, compartments, programs, and expression characteristics should be considered, and these are correlated with each other. In addition, companies and brands should increase the proportion and quality of brand experiences in commercial facilities to provide consumers with memorable experiences.
