The purpose of this study is to observe the changes in literary interpretation ability and attitude after organizing and implementing a literature circles program for middle school students. The literature circles program shares individual’s role and form communal meanings through interaction. It is meaningful that the interaction of literary works is not only for linear reading but also makes readers enjoy the literary works and comprehend deeper meanings of literary works. Also, it leads learners to positively perceive reading and to grow as subjective and active readers through a process of interacting with literacy text and reader, text and text, reader and reader being social and cultural contexts, internal and external meanings, and personal roles.
The research contents set are as follows :
1. Organizing literature circles program to strengthen interactions. 2. Through the operation of the literature circles program, changes in literary interpretation ability and attitude are analyzed.
8 middle school freshman and sophomore were selected as analysis subjects of this study. Participants in the program are middle school students living in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. The program was operated with total of 10 sessions with 120 minutes per session. The 10-week course was recorded, transcribed records, teacher's observation log, and students' activity results were collected and analyzed, and the changes that appeared to students after the program was executed were analyzed.
The research result from this program operation case study is as follows.
First, The composition of the literature circles program should be composed by selecting literary texts according to the text level of middle school students. The first half of the program learns to understand the flow of text and induce interest through reading along with detailed reading. In the second half of the program, the literary experience of substituting social and cultural phenomena into one's life and experience through intertextuality was learned through active interaction and expression of the hidden meaning of text in the middle of the program. Second, the literature circles program for middle school students deeply understood the work through active interaction with community members. The opportunity to understand literature by actively sharing one's responses was achieved through close relationships with community members and cooperative discourse in a free atmosphere of discussion. Through this, the participation and involvement of members increased, and voluntary participation gave interest and positive perception of reading. Third, the literature circles program for middle school students actively engaged in mutual negotiations through role sheets, enriching interpretation. Using the role sheet, the participants' life, social, and cultural phenomena were connected to bring various experiences through intertext ventilation, and the conversation continued in and out of the text. In-depth interpretation of literary works emerged through active interaction leading to new interpretive questions and extended questions with conclusions shared through the generalization process of emotional expression and empathy through receptive attitudes.
This study made the following conclusions from the above research results.
First, each person's role through the literature circles program is highly efficient when selecting text that middle school students find difficult because it is possible to understand literary works deeply. In addition, it is advantageous for readers to improve their literary interpretation skills through activities that increase voluntary participation through active interaction and understand literary works deeply. Second, when the literature circles program is actively interactive, active participation appears through the formation of a communal meaning for literary works. Through this, it is advantageous to improve the reading attitude of interest in literary works.
literature circles programs can be actively used as educational programs to enhance literary interpretation and attitude. Thus, the researcher expects that the literature circles activity of constructive debating to be more active inside and outside school curriculum.
