The COVID-19 pandemic situation has come as a crisis for all age groups, and a sudden change in education methods due to online classes has come as a bigger crisis for teenagers. Among the effects of the COVID-19 situation on teenagers, many people agree on concerns that the improvement of smartphone accessibility due to online classes could lead to the risk of smartphone overuse and addiction. This study was conducted to examine changes in youth smartphone overuse and problematic use before and after the inflow of COVID-19, analyze the correlation between COVID-19 and smartphone overuse and problematic use, and identify the characteristics of youth groups at high risk of negative smartphone use (overuse, problematic use) due to COVID-19. For the research data, the data from the 16th Youth Health Behavior Survey (2020), which has been surveyed after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the data from the 13th Youth Health Behavior Survey (2017), which is the latest survey before COVID-19 that has the same questions as the 16th survey in the smartphone addiction field, were used. Respondents who don’t use smartphones or have missing values from each variable were excluded, and a total of 58,895 respondents (28,231 middle school students and 30,664 high school students) were finally selected as the subjects of analysis. In order to understand the general characteristics and distribution of the study subjects, frequency analysis was performed on demographic factors, socioeconomic factors, physical environmental factors, health behavior factors, and psychological emotional factors, and the relationship between each variable and smartphone use was confirmed through a chi-square test. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to confirm the correlation between COVID-19 and smartphone overuse and problematic use. All independent variables were corrected, and the Odds Ratio (OR) and 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was calculated as the analysis result. As a result of the study, the rate of youth smartphone overuse was 55% before COVID-19 and 75.5% after COVID-19, which increased significantly. The proportion of problematic use of smartphones was found to be 39.6% before COVID-19 and 34.6% after COVID-19, which decreased slightly after COVID-19, and the higher the smartphone use times were, the higher the problematic use rate was. As a result, youth smartphone overuse increased 2.03 times and problematic use decreased 0.67 times after COVID-19, and both values were statistically significant. As a result of subdividing and analyzing the problematic use of smartphones into family conflicts, friend (social) conflicts, and difficulties in academic performance due to smartphone use, they decreased 0.76 times, 0.91 times, and 0.68 times respectively. This is presumed to be due to the increase in the use of smartphones for education purposes related to online classes and the reduction in social relations, and further research on the relationship between COVID-19 and changes in smartphone usage by content types is needed in the future. The groups with relatively high possibility of overuse of smartphones due to COVID-19 were male teenagers, teenagers with low academic achievements, teenagers from rural areas, teenagers from multicultural families, and teenagers with less physical activities, and the groups with higher smartphone use time had higher problematic use rates. In addition, teenagers with economical difficulties due to COVID-19 had higher possibilities of overuse and problematic use. This study is meaningful in that the relationship between COVID-19 and youth smartphone overuse and problematic use was expressed in figures and groups with high possibility of negative use of smartphones due to COVID-19 were presented based on figures. I hope this research data to be used as a policy basis for preventing smartphone overuse and addiction among teenagers who have been negatively affected by sudden changes in education methods and reduced social relations due to COVID-19.
