Traditionally, the museum mainly focused on their collections, research, and exhibitions, which were their most important activities, giving little interest in observing the needs of their visitors. However, recently, as museums have emphasized marketing in attracting more visitors, they have tried to satisfy the expectations of their visitors. In this trend, museums have adopted new technologies, like AR and VR, to meet museum visitors' needs and enhance their experiences. However, with the application of VR in museums whose basic concept is authenticity and education, concerns have been raised concerning the inauthenticity of VR featuring interactive entertainment. In this regard, this study, investigating the role of VR exhibits in museums, examines whether it serves as an effective tool to satisfy museum visitors' needs and attract them. For this purpose, this study composes three types of research. The first one is a qualitative study that explores the authenticity of VR and its role as an educational tool in a museum. The research examines museum professionals’ opinions on the introduction of digital technology, like VR, to museums. This study posed three research questions: Does VR contribute to attracting visitors?; Is it helpful for VR to educate museum visitors?; Is it possible for VR to have authenticity? This study conducted a focus group interview as well as in-depth interviews with museum professionals who have worked in installing VR facilities in their museums. The results of this qualitative study indicated that museum professionals were positive about VR as an educational tool. Additionally, they were aware that VR content should present authentic stories and images of museum artifacts. According to the findings, VR, with the importance of interactive experiences and authentic stories, might contribute to attracting visitors’ interest to museums. The second research is a quantitative one that explores how VR users’ perceptions of presence and authenticity in the museum context influence their satisfaction and willingness to return to the museum. The results showed that VR presence influenced visitors’ perceptions of VR authenticity, indicating that visitors’ perceptions of presence were the key factor in their authentic experiences in a VR environment. In addition, presence was identified as a significant predictor of VR experiences. Specifically, possible action, the one dimension of presence, had a significant impact on the four realms of experiences, suggesting that the possibility of interaction in a virtual environment was a significant predictor of VR experiences. Next, this research found an important association between authenticity and VR experiences. Existential authenticity, in particular, had a positive effect on all dimensions of VR experiences, such as education, entertainment, escapism, and esthetic. As the results of this study indicated, presence and authenticity played a significant role in enhancing VR experiences. Especially, this study found that the interaction factor in presence and the existential experiences in authenticity had the greatest impact on VR experiences. As well, the study found a causal relationship between VR experiences and satisfaction. Those who are satisfied with the VR experience will also be satisfied with museum visits, which will ultimately encourage the willingness to experience VR again and revisit the museum. In conclusion, the study shows that VR exhibits have been proven to positively affect museum visitors and act as an effective marketing tool in bringing them to the museum. As with the second study, the third is another quantitative study that explores factors such as visitors' satisfaction and their intention to return as a result of both the VR experience and the perception of service quality that they perceive in a VR setting. The study found that only the entertainment variable affected positive visitor satisfaction among VR experiences, and only the variables of responsiveness and assurance affected positive satisfaction among five variables of service quality. It was also discovered that entertainment was significantly associated with revisit intention, whereas only reliability and responsiveness were statistically significant with regard to service quality. In addition, the results revealed that the effect of service quality on customer satisfaction and revisit intention was not as great as that of the VR experience. Although the effect of service quality on visitors' attitudes and behavioral intentions is not the same as that of the VR experience, the study suggests that museum staff’s professionalism and compliance are the significant factors that result in visitors' having a positive perception and returning to the museum again. The present study concludes that VR exhibits in museums provide visitors with novel experiences, such as an authentic existential experience, while also improving the visitors' contentment and their desire to return. VR exhibits undoubtedly have a positive effect on the museums’ experiential marketing efforts to bring visitors. The findings of this study provide theoretical implications for extending previous research about the authenticity in museums to the context of VR exhibits. As well, the study contributes to the theoretical extensions in that it finds the perception of the presence and the authenticity to be essential factors in the VR experience in a museum context. In addition, the findings provide museum professionals with managerial insights into how VR exhibits can be useful in marketing strategies to attract new visitors by showing that VR exhibits can be effective tools to get people interested in museums. Finally, this study suggests that the VR stories and interactive effects in the VR environments may offer their users an existentially authentic experience, providing VR developers with practical insight into considering the importance of immersive experiences in virtual environments.
