노인의료복지시설에서 노인요양시설의 특징은 무엇인가? 2008년 노인장기요양보험제도 시행과 함께 가장 큰 변화라 할 수 있는 것은 노인요양공동생활가정이 신설된 것이다. 노인의료복지시설에서 노인요양시설은 입소노인 10인 이상의 중간규모에서 대규모 요양시설의 형태를 갖추고 있으며 집단생활을 하는 것이 특징이고 노인요양공동생활가정은 입소노인 5~9인의 일반가정과 흡사한 소규모 형태 시설로써 개인생활이 비교적 가능한 것이 특징이다. 특히 노인요양공동생활가정은 2008년 422개, 2009년 1,009개, 2014년 2,134개로 기하급수적으로 늘어나고 있다[1].
노인요양시설에 입소 후 노인들이 적응하는데 얼마나 걸리는가? 이와 같이 시설로의 이동에 대한 노인들의 다양한 문제가 발생되면서 시설에서의 ‘적응’에 대한 이슈가 대두되었다. 노인이 시설 입소 후, 환경의 변화로 발생하는 문제를 점차 해결하고 다른 사람들과 친밀감을 형성하며 안정되어 가는 데는 평균 6개월 이상이 걸리는 것으로 보고되고 있고 우리나라 입소노인의 경우 입소 후부터 1년까지 적응하는 데 가장 힘든 것으로 나타났다[8-10]. 특히 시설 입소가 자발적으로 이루어지지 않는 노인의 경우 더욱 스트 레스를 초래하는 사건이기 때문에 본인의 무가치감, 무기력감 등의 부정적 정서를 초래하게 된다[3,11].
