해양 플라스틱 쓰레기의 약 80%는 육지에서 유입되는 이유는? 인간의 활동이 육지에 기반을 두고 있기 때문에, 해양 플라스틱 쓰레기의 약 80%는 육지에서 유입이 된다.15,41,42) 첫 번째, 보통의 플라스틱 쓰레기는 물의 밀도보다 작거나 비슷하기 때문에 강물을 통해서 많은 부분이 해양에 유입될 수 있다.43) 두 번째, 폭풍이나 태풍 등을 통해 플라스틱 쓰레기가 해양에 유입될 수 있다.44) 그리고 세 번째, 해안선 인근의 토양에 사용된 농업용 비닐필름, 살충제 용기 및 비료 포장재 등은 강우유출과 조류에 따라 해양으로 유입될 수 있다.45) 이러한 작용을 통해 육지로부터 해양으로 유입되는 플라스틱 쓰레기는 그 후 장기적인 자연적이거나 인위적인 마모, 산화, 및 분해 등의 과정을 통해 이차 미세플라스틱으로 변화한다. 하수처리장에서 배출되는 마이크로비즈를 함유한 유출수, 산업체에서 종종 발생하는 레진 펠릿의 누출사고 등을 통해 일차 미세플라스틱이 육지에서 해양으로 유입되기도 한다.36,46) 그리고 해양 플라스틱 쓰레기의 나머지(약 20%)는 해양 자체에서 발생이 되는데, 잃어버린 어업 장비, 양식업 장비 및 선박 화물 등이 장기적인 마모, 산화 및 분해 등을 통해 이차 미세플라스틱으로 변화한다.
