This study aimed to investigate the functions and roles that Korean school social workers perform in school settings. To do this, the research that Costin conducted in 1969 to find out the functions that school social workers played in the U.S. was replicated with 27 Korean school social workers working in schools. The study results revealed that the functions performed by the school social workers were classified into 7 groups as follows: 1) linking family, school and community, 2) social welfare services for students, 3) cooperative work with teachers, 4) case management, 5) social welfare services for families, 6) policy making and administration, 7) Professional activity. Among the functions, school social workers perceived social welfare services for students and cooperative work with teachers to be most important and performed the two functions most often. As for the 5 other functions, although they were perceived to be important, in actual practice, school social workers did not perform th em frequently. When functions that are unique to Korean school social workers were studied in ter ms of their importance and frequency in performance, the role of providing a place for rest and relaxation was perceived to be the most important and played most frequently. Other roles that were perceived to be important and performed often were providing orientation to freshmen or newly enrolled students, directing students ordered to do social service as disciplinary punishment, directing students participating in volunteer work and directing students" club activities.
