의사소통이론에 따르면 의사소통기술은 어떻게 분류 가능한가? 한편 임상현장의 의사소통기술은 질적 측면에서도 환자의 요구를 충분히 반영하지 못하고 있는 상황이다. 의사소통이론에 따르면 의사소통기술은 크게 전달형, 반응형, 상호작용형으로 분류될 수 있으며[4,5], 의료인들은 수신자인 환자 보다는 송신자인 의료인 중심의 의사소통에 익숙하고, 사용하는 의사소통기술 역시 쉬운 용어 사용하기(using simple language)나 천천히 말하기(speaking slowly) 같은 전달형 기술들을 주로 사용하고 있다[9]. 즉, 의료인들은 환자와의 의사소통시 정규교육과정에서 기본적으로 배우는 ‘쉬운 용어 사용하기’나 ‘천천히 말하기’ 같은 전달형 기술을 많이 사용하는 반면 환자의 의료정보이해능력을 높여주는 상호작용형 기술로 권장되고 있는 ‘다시 가르치기(using teach-back)’와 같은 상급기술의 사용률은 높지 않다[7,9,12].
