본 연구의 목적은 AASL이 2018년에 발행한 "학습자, 사서교사, 학교도서관을 위한 국가수준 학교도서관 기준" 문서에 제시된 기준의 체계와 내용을 분석하고 시사점을 도출하여 한국 학교도서관 기준의 방향과 내용에 참고할 기초정보를 제공하는 데 있다. AASL의 미국 국가수준 학교도서관 기준은 학습자 기준과 사서교사 기준, 학교도서관 기준 및 이들 3개의 기준을 통합한 통합 학교도서관 기준틀을 제시하고 있다. 그리고 학교도서관이라는 시설과 공간에서 교육의 수요자인 학습자와 교육자인 사서교사의 교육활동에 초점을 맞추어 학습자와 사서교사의 역량을 성장시키는 데 중점을 두고 있다. 학교도서관이라는 물리적인 환경이 어느 정도 구축된 상황에서 학습자와 사서교사의 교육내용과 역량에 관한 기준을 제정할 필요가 있으며, 교육내용을 포함한 자료에 보다 많은 관심을 가져야 할 필요가 있다.
